A Dose of Genealogy Inspiration: TV Shows

I am bound to them, though I cannot look into their eyes or hear their voices. I honor their history. I cherish their lives. I will tell their story. I will remember them. Author Unknown

While genealogy research can be fun, it can also be a challenge. Especially, if you are dedicated to searching in hopes of finding a certain record and are not having much luck. Times like these call for a bit of genealogy inspiration!

Below, I have listed several great genealogy TV shows which serve as a healthy dose of genealogy encouragement.

1.     Finding Your Roots

Finding Your Roots has been airing on PBS since 2012 and is in its fifth season. The show is hosted by Henry Louis Gates. Gates is an American literary critic, historian and filmmaker and he currently serves as the Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. The show uses a mix of traditional genealogy research accompanied by DNA testing to examine the family histories of its celebrity guests. Guests of Finding Your Roots have included Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio, Christiane Amanpour, Laura Linney, and Sheryl Sandberg. The show airs on PBS on Tuesdays at 8/7c. Episodes are available to purchase from iTunes and seasons of the show can be purchased from Amazon Video.

2.     Genealogy Roadshow

Genealogy Roadshow began airing on PBS in September of 2013. Each episode, the show travels to a different city within the United States. Guests from those cities gather at a historical location and meet with professional genealogists where they discuss their research. The show features cities such as Nashville, Miami, New Orleans, and St. Louis. There are three seasons. Since the third season has ended, PBS has not discussed whether or not the series will continue. Previously aired episodes’ air on PBS fairly frequently and episodes of the show can also be purchased from iTunes and Amazon Video. Unfortunately, the show is not available to stream on the PBS website without a paid membership.

3.     Who Do You Think You Are?

One of my personal favorites! The show started airing in 2010, make it one of the first genealogy based television shows. Each episode features a different celebrity who goes on a journey to trace their lineage. This show is appealing because the various celebrity guests go on location to research their genealogies, rather than just performing the research in one location. For example, Rita Wilsons episode began at her Los Angeles, California home and she traveled to Greece and several areas of Bulgaria as she traced her roots. At each location, guests are greeted by a local genealogist who helps them uncover the mysteries of their ancestors. The show is in its tenth season and aired on NBC for a couple of years and has been featured on TLC since 2013. You are able to watch full episodes for free on TLCs website after logging into the account associated with your cable provider. Again, episodes are available for purchase through iTunes and Amazon video.

I hope you enjoy checking these shows out and finding some genealogy inspiration! Happy watching J
