“The
best part about genealogy is searching for ancestors and finding friends.” – Lawrence Dillard
There are many, many genealogy forums
available online where people are able to make inquiries about questions they
may have as they research. These forums can include specific questions one may
have about an ancestor – such as where birth records may be
located or someone seeking birth parents for an ancestor.
One of these forums, which is lesser
known, is History Hub. History Hub (www.historyhub.history.gov)
is a government-run forum website where anyone may create an account and post
their questions and inquiries to the forum. Or, if you have an answer to
someone else’s question, you may reply to their
inquiry as well. For example, one person posted looking for descendants of
Miles Standish and another person posted who was looking for her
great-grandfather’s marriage record.
The website also has a blog. Posts
include “Suggestions and Advice for Family
History Researchers” (linked below). Most blog posts are
written by individuals who work for the National Archives and Records
Administration, however some are written by members of the forum. I would also recommend
checking out the “Immigration and Naturalization
Records: Where are they?” post and the “WWII Military Unit Records at the National Archives” post (both linked below).
The History Hub website also contains
information which helps those who are seeking help with finding military
records, information about women’s
rights and suffrage, African-American records, and American Indian records,
among many other things.
I recommend checking out the History
Hub website if you have a specific genealogy question or if you are looking for
historical information to accompany your genealogy findings!
