"There are only two lasting
bequests we can give our children - one is roots, and the other, wings." –

Teacher
Planet – This website
includes printable coloring pages, worksheets, lesson plans, printable pedigree
charts which go three and four generations back
AncestryK12 – Created
by Ancestry.com, this website has a grant program, and an informational booklet,
available through PDF or iBooks, called “Family History in
the Classroom”. The website also provides a list of lesson
plans, which includes, 1940 Census Lesson, Civil War, Trail of Tears Lesson,
and Immigration Over Time. The downloadable lesson plans have been created by
teachers “according to the History Standards administered
by the National Center for History in the School at the University of
California, Los Angeles under the guidance of the National Council for History
Standards”. The website also contains printable charts
and forms, research calendars, and family group sheets. This website has the
most complete set of resources for teaching genealogy and I would highly recommend
it.
Cyndi’s List of Genealogy Resources (kids and teen section) – This website
has one of the most complete listings of genealogy resources on the internet
and also has a section of genealogy resources specifically for kids and teens. Cyndi’s List
contains website listings for general resources, education, how to guides,
magazines, journals, and more. I’d recommend this
website as a starting point. While it contains a great listing of resources,
the website isn’t particularly user-friendly.
USGenWeb
Kidz (a
rootsweb site) – Contains resources for teachers and parents. The
website contains ideas for journalism lesson plans, geography lesson plans as
well as activities based on genetics and physical features.
Bright
Hub Education – This website
contains lesson plans for teaching genealogy to elementary school students. The
lesson plans are detailed, containing lesson objectives and specific books and
charts to use in order to carry out the lesson plans.
Teachers
Pay Teachers – This website
contains some great charts, worksheets, and lesson plans, created by teachers,
for teachers. The only downside to the resources on this website is that the downloadable
PDF’s are not free. However, many are less than
$10.
